Maha Shivratri 2025: Will the Indian Stock Market Be Open on February 26?

Stock Market News: The Indian stock markets, represented by the key indexes Nifty50 and Sensex, will be closed on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in observance of Maha Shivratri.

Maha Shivratri is an annual Hindu celebration in February and March honoring the god Shiva. According to the Hindu calendar, the event takes place on the fourteenth day of the first half of the lunar month Phalguna.

Previous Session Highlights

The benchmark indices, the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty50, both fell more than 1% in the week’s opening trading session (Monday, February 24). The Sensex fell 856.65 points (1.14 percent) to end at 74,454.41, while the Nifty50 dropped 242.55 points (1.06 percent) to 22,553.35. 38 of the 50 Nifty50 equities finished down, with Wipro, HCL Tech, TCS, and Infosys leading the fall. On the other side, Mahindra & Mahindra, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, and Nestle India benefited.

Broader markets tracked the benchmarks, with the Nifty Smallcap100 and Nifty Midcap100 indexes losing 1.02 percent and 0.94 percent, respectively. With the exception of Nifty Auto and FMCG, the majority of sectoral indexes finished in the red. The largest losers were Nifty IT (-2.71%) and Nifty Pharma (-2.17%).

2025 Holiday Calendar List

According to the NSE’s 2025 holiday schedule, the stock exchanges will be closed for 14 holidays throughout the year.

In addition to the shutdown of stock markets during Maha Shivratri, March will have two holidays: Holi on March 14 (Friday) and Id-Ul-Fitr on March 31 (Monday).

In April, holidays include Shri Mahavir Jayanti on Thursday, April 10, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti on Monday, April 14, and Good Friday on Friday, April 18.

Maharashtra Day, celebrated on May 1 (Thursday), concludes the first half of the year’s market holidays.

Independence Day (August 15, Friday) and Ganesh Chaturthi (August 27, Wednesday) are both public holidays in August.

October will include many holidays, including Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti/Dussehra on October 2 (Thursday), Diwali Laxmi Pujan on October 21 (Tuesday), and Diwali-Balipratipada on October 22 (Wednesday).

November will observe Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev on November 5 (Wednesday), and the year will conclude with Christmas on December 25 (Thursday).

Stock market timings

Indian stock market hours are from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday. A pre-open session runs from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM on regular trading days. The market remains closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
