Theme of G20 India 2023

“Vasudhavia Kutumbakam,” or “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” is the theme of the G20 Summit this year. It focuses on the value of all life—human, animal, plant, and microorganisms. This is taken from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad.

The Agend of the G20 Summit 2023

Scheduled to be held in Delhi, the G20 Summit India has defined six crucial agenda priorities, each of which holds great importance for the global community. These priorities include climate finance and life, green development, accelerated, inclusive, and resilient growth, technological transformation, accelerating progress on the SDGs, multilateral institutions for the 21st century, and women-led development.

With the aim to build  a cleaner, greener, and bluer future, the Indian Presidency will also put light on the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE), with a focus on ecologically responsible and sustainable options at both the individual lifestyle and the national development level. The following tracks will be the main areas of attention for the working groups: agriculture, anti-corruption, culture, digital economy, disaster risk reduction, development, education, employment, environment, and climate sustenance.

The G20 is expected to adopt a Leaders’ Declaration at the summit’s conclusion that demonstrates the commitment of the leaders to the issues that were discussed and determined to be one of the top priorities in the Ministerial and Working Group Meetings.

G20 Summit: How Would It Benefit India?

At the G20 Summit in 2023, India will have a significant opportunity to participate in discussions on crucial global concerns. India wants to unite the world under the motto “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” emphasizing the importance of global cooperation in the process. India will host the G20 Presidency and schedule almost 200 meetings at 32 various locations throughout the country. The “One Earth, One Family, One Future” or “Vasudhaiva Kutumba-Kam” theme of the G20 represents India’s desire to create a world where equality and cohesion transcend the boundaries between the first and third worlds.

India would actively work to build international agreements and restructure multilateral organizations like the UN in order to contribute to a new global order for the post-Covid age. India has the opportunity to assume the role of global leadership and advance the interests of the Global South while it is the G20 Presidency. The COVID-19 epidemic, the Ukraine crisis, and other pressing challenges all require attention, and the G20 has gained importance as a venue for doing so.

History of the G20 Summit

The Group of Twenty (G20) was established in the late 1990s in the aftermath of the financial crisis that mostly affected East Asia and Southeast Asia. Middle-income nations are encouraged to participate in order to ensure global financial stability.

At present, the G20 Summit works as an annual gathering of national leaders with representatives from the IMF and the World Bank. The summit is more like a platform that enables discussions on global economic issues and cooperation.

The G20 countries collectively account for 60% of the global population, 80% of the global GDP, and 75% of worldwide commerce. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the EU are members. Spain is welcomed as a frequent visitor.

The G20 is evidence that significant regions that share common objectives have come together. Regional organizations serve as the foundational components that, when taken as a whole, symbolize a common goal, unity, prosperity for all, and multilateralism in international affairs. In 1999, 20 nations joined forces to create the G20, as it is presently known.

 Background

The G20 summit had been scheduled to take place in Italy in 2022 and India in 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated at the 2018 G20 Buenos Aires summit in Argentina that he had asked Italy to host the summit in 2021 and allowed India to host it in 2022, in honor of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence. Due to the progress in bilateral relations, Italy consented to let India host the G20 summit in its place in 2022. However, given that Indonesia would also be in charge of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2023, India and Indonesia traded G-20 leadership in response to a proposal made by Retno Marsudi, the foreign minister of Indonesia.

New Delhi will host the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10, 2023. The fourth Sustainable Finance Working Group Meeting will be held in Varanasi on September 13 and 14, 2023, and the fourth Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion meeting will be held in Mumbai on September 14, 15, and 16, 2023. The 4th Framework Working Group Meeting will be held in Raipur on September 18 and 19, 2023.
