Vande Bharat Metro Soon to Replace Mumbai Local Trains: Details here

Written by Sanjay Kumar

The Mumbai local trains, famously known as the lifeline of the metro city, are set to be replaced by 238 Vande Bharat Metro trains, according to senior officials from the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). The Railway Board has given its approval for this development.

Under the ambitious Mumbai Urban Transport Project-III (MUTP-III) and 3A (MUTP-3A), which are spearheaded by the Railway ministry and the Maharashtra government, these rakes will be procured, as per a statement from an MRVC spokesperson cited by PTI. The procurement will adhere to the Make in India guidelines of the Centre’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, ensuring that the trains are manufactured by a technology partner.

The MRVC will undertake the procurement process, which will include maintenance responsibilities for a duration of 35 years. Additionally, two maintenance depots for the rakes have already been approved under MUTP-III and 3A and will be established by the technology partner.

The spokesperson mentioned that the MUTP-III and MUTP-3A projects have a combined value of INR 10,947 crore and INR 33,690 crore, respectively.

The Vande Bharat Metro is a smaller version of India’s first indigenous semi-high-speed train, the ‘Vande Bharat Express.’ Its introduction was announced in the Union Budget 2023-24.

According to the railways, the Vande Bharat Metro will be a cutting-edge train that will operate on shorter distances, connecting cities that are approximately 100 kilometers apart. The train will run at high frequencies, with as many as four to five trips per day. It will consist of eight coaches, resembling a typical metro train, as opposed to the 16-car composition of regular Vande Bharat trains.

The aim of these trains is to provide passengers with a rapid and convenient commuting experience, especially for job seekers and students who need to travel between cities. This modern transportation system will not only save time but also offer world-class facilities.

In conclusion, the Vande Bharat Metro trains will soon replace Mumbai local trains, providing a rapid and convenient commuting experience. With approval from the Railway Board and adherence to Make in India guidelines, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation will handle procurement and maintenance. These trains will connect cities around 100 kilometers apart, operating at high frequencies for efficient transportation.
