The upcoming 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is set to kick off on June 4 next year, culminating with the final match on June 30. As per ESPNCricinfo’s report, the ninth installment of the T20 World Cup will be hosted at 10 different venues, spanning across the West Indies and the United States of America.
In the 2022 edition, held in October, England emerged victorious by defeating Pakistan in the thrilling final, while India faced defeat in the semi-finals.
Recently, an ICC delegation conducted a visit to five shortlisted venues in the United States. This marks the first time these venues will host an international global cricket event. The selected venues include Morrisville, Dallas, and New York, along with Lauderhill in Florida, where tournament matches and warm-ups will be held. Notably, the 20-team T20 World Cup 2024, jointly hosted by West Indies and the USA, will be played across a total of 10 venues.
Participating in the upcoming tournament will be 20 teams, including Ireland, Scotland, and Papua New Guinea, who secured their spots through ICC’s regional qualifiers. Additionally, teams from Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, West Indies, and the USA have already qualified.
A total of 12 teams had secured their berths for the T20 World Cup 2024 prior to the regional qualifiers. West Indies and USA gained direct entry as hosts. The remaining eight teams, namely Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka, qualified based on their top-eight rankings from the 2022 T20 World Cup. Afghanistan and Bangladesh earned their spots through their current T20 International rankings.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the T20 World Cup 2024 will follow a different format from the previous two editions. The 20 participating teams will be divided into four groups, each comprising five teams, for the initial stage. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8s. In the Super 8s stage, the teams will be divided into two groups of four, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals.
