Commonwealth Games 2022 updates: India’s medal tally rises to six with three gold

Indian athletes are doing well in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Riding off a successful outing on 30 July, India managed to add more medals to the tally on Sunday (July 31). Achinta Sheuli and Jeremy Lalrinnunga won gold in weightlifting and wrote their name in history by making a CWG record in snatch and in total kgs lifted.

World champion boxer Nikhat Zareen, the Indian women’s cricket team, and the Indian men’s hockey team all won their respective matches. The Indian team is now ranked sixth, just behind Canada, which has won more silver medals than India but has the same number of gold medals.

  1. Sanket Mahadev Sargar – SILVER (Weightlifting, Men’s 55kg class)
  2. Gururaja Poojary – BRONZE (Weightlifting, Men’s 61kg class)
  3. Bidyarani Devi – SILVER (Weightlifting, Women’s 55kg class)

  • Srihari Natraj reaches semi-finals in 100m backstroke
  • Women’s Table Tennis (Team) – India 3-0 South Africa
  • Women’s Table Tennis (Team) – India 3-0 Fiji
  • Boxing – Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) through to Round of 16. Shiva Thapa (Boxer) started his campaign with a commanding win
  • Men’s Table Tennis (Team) – India 3-0 Barbados
  • The women’s cricket team loses to Australia by three wickets
  • India defeats Pakistan 5-0 in a Badminton Mixed Team group match

Day 2 highlights

Aquatics

  • Men’s 100m Backstroke-Final: Srihari Nataraj (India) finished 7th
  • Men’s 200m Freestyle: Kushagra Rawat finishes eighth in Heat 3 with a time of 1:54.56

Artistic Gymnastics

  • India finish 5th as a team with a combined score of 102.650. Pranati Nayak and Ruthuja Nataraj finished the 4 apparatus. Just the vault for Protistha Samanta where she gets a total of 11.950

Athletics

  • Men’s Marathon: Nitendra Singh Rawat posts 2:19.22 to finish 12th

Badminton

  • Mixed Team event: India beat Sri Lanka 5-0
  • Mixed Team event: India takes on Australia

Boxing

  • Men’s Over 54-57kg: Hussam Mohammed beats Amzolele Dyeyi 5-0 on points
  • Men’s 86kg-92kg (Heavyweight) – Round of 16- Sanjeet lost to Ato Leau Plodzicki-Faoagali 3-2
  • Lovlina Borgohain beat New Zealand’s Ariane Nicholson 5-0

Lawn Bowls

  • Women’s Fours – Section D – Round 3- India beat Canada 17-7
  • Women’s Singles: Section B Round 3: Tania Choudhury goes down 10-21 to Laura Daniels
  • Men’s Triples: Section A Round 3: India and Malta play out a 16-16 tie
  • Men’s Pairs: Section C Round 3: India beat Cook Islands 13-10

Squash

  • Men’s Singles: Abhay Singh retires in the second game against Alan Clyn
  • Women’s Singles: India’s Anahat Singh lost to Emily Whitlock of Wales, 11-7, 11-7, 4-11, 11-6
  • Men’s Singles: Ramit Tandon gives Christopher Binnie a walkover
  • Women’s Singles: Sunayna Kuruvilla goes down 7-11, 7-11, 7-11 to Aifa Azman of Malaysia
  • Men’s Singles: Saurav Ghosal beats Shamil Wakeel of Sri Lanka 11-4, 11-4, 11-6

Table Tennis

  • Women’s Team: Group 2 match: India beat Guyana 3-0 for their third straight victory. India qualify for the quarter-finals
  • Women’s Team: Quarter-finals: India went down 2-3 to Malaysia

  • Popy Hazarika finishes in seventh place.
  • Achinta Sheuli wins gold in men’s 73kg final
  • Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins gold in men’s 67kg final

Badminton

  • India beat South Africa 3-0 in mixed team quarter-final

Cricket 

  • India women beat Pakistan by three wickets in Group A contest

Boxing

  • Nikhat Zareen beats Helena Ismael Bagao in the women’s light flyweight round of 16
  • Shiva Thapa loses to Reese Lynch 1-4 in the men’s light welterweight round of 16
  • Sumit loses to Callum Peters in the men’s middleweight round of the 16
  • Sagar defeats Maxime Yegnong in the Super heavyweight round of 16

Aquatics

  • Sajan Prakash finishes fourth in men’s 200m butterfly Heat 3
  • Srihari Nataraj qualifies for 50m backstroke final

Hockey 

  • India beat Ghana 11-0 in the men’s Pool B contest
