Ratan Tata, Justice KT Thomas & Karia Munda join PM CARES Fund as trustees

Veteran industrialist Ratan Tata, former SC judge KT Thomas, and former deputy Lok Sabha speaker Karina Munda have been nominated as trustees of the PM CARES Fund, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharamanand Union home minister Amit Shah are the other two trustees.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, and Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister, attended a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the PM CARES Fund on September 21 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the meeting, 1 – Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons, 2 – Kariya Munda, former Deputy speaker, and 3 – Justice KT Thomas, former Supreme Courtjudgeappointed as the newly nominated trustees of the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM CARES) Fund.

The trust also nominated three names to constitute an advisory board for PM CARES. These are Rajiv Mehrishi (former Comptroller and Auditor General of India), Sudha Murthy(former chairman, Infosys Foundation), and Anand Shah(co-founder of Teach for India and former CEO of Indicorps and Piramal Foundation). According to the Prime Minister, the engagement of new trustees and advisors will offer a comprehensive view on the functioning of the PM CARES Fund.

“Their vast experience in public life will further strengthen the fund in making the fund more responsive to various public needs,” the PMO said. The Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund) were set up on March 27, 2020. The stated objective of the fund is for prevention and relief efforts against the coronavirus outbreak and similar pandemic-like situations in the future.

The Minister of Defence, Minister of Home Affairs, and Minister of Finance, Government of India are ex-officio Trustees of the Fund. and Prime Minister is the ex-officio Chairman of the PM CARES Fund. The fund receives no budgetary support and is entirely funded by voluntary contributions from individuals and organizations. Donations to PM CARES Fund would qualify for 80G benefit for 100% exemption under Income Tax Act. According to the Centre’s data, the PM Cares Fund raised a total of INR 7,031.99 crore between 2020 and 21.
