Written by Sanjay Kumar

Starting as the Sarpanch of Badal at the young age of 20, becoming a legislator at 30, and assuming the role of the Chief Minister at 43, Parkash Singh Badal was the only surviving member of a political generation that witnessed India’s Independence, survived the Emergency, and experienced an unexpected twist in Punjab’s politics in 2022. He was a remarkable figure in the country’s political landscape, truly deserving the title of a hero.

Following the demise of former Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Parkash Singh Badal, the central government has declared a two-day state mourning on April 26 and April 27. This period will serve as an opportunity to pay homage to the late leader. In light of this, national flags will be lowered to half-mast on all government buildings. Additionally, no official entertainment will take place during the mourning period as a mark of respect.

Badal passed away at the age of 95 in the ICU of Fortis Hospital in Mohali. He is survived by his wife Surinder Kaur Badal, son Sukhbir Singh Badal, and daughter-in-law Harsimrat Kaur Badal. The news was confirmed by his son and current SAD President, Sukhbir Singh Badal. The veteran politician was admitted to Fortis Hospital over a week ago after experiencing difficulty breathing. His last rites will be conducted in Badal village in Bathinda.
