Massive Tragedy in Odisha as Three Trains Collide: 233 Dead, 900 Injured – Helpline Numbers Announced

A tragic accident occurred on the evening of Friday, June 2nd, in Balasore, Odisha, resulting in the loss of over 200 lives and leaving 900 individuals injured. The catastrophe unfolded when a passenger train collided with derailed coaches from another train, and a third freight train was also involved, according to Odisha Chief Secretary PK Jena, who provided this information to the media.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the train crash, which stands as one of the most devastating incidents in recent Indian history.

The collision involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train. The latest report from Odisha’s Chief Secretary reveals that the death toll has risen to 233, with approximately 900 people sustaining injuries. The accident took place in Balasore district, approximately 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on Friday.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with nearby hospitals on high alert. The site has seen the mobilization of three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units, four Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force units, over 15 fire rescue teams, 30 doctors, 200 police personnel, and 60 ambulances, as reported by Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep to media. In light of this horrific train crash, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has declared a one-day state mourning.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the accident site this morning to assess the situation. He stated that restoration work would commence immediately, with staff and equipment ready for the task. However, he emphasized that the primary focus at the moment is on rescuing and providing medical aid to the injured. The details of the incident will only become clear after a thorough inquiry, and an independent investigation will be conducted.
In response to the tragedy, Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, INR 2 lakh for those severely injured, and INR 50,000 for individuals with minor injuries resulting from the accident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the incident and announced a compensation of INR 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and INR 50,000 for the injured from the PM’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

As a consequence of the accident, 18 long-distance trains have been canceled thus far. The incident occurred on the Howrah-Chennai main line within the Kharagpur division of the South Eastern Railway.
