Twitter, formerly known as X, will no longer be a free platform for users. In a significant change, the micro-blogging giant, X, has announced its plans to introduce an annual subscription fee of $1 for all users. This fee will be applicable to various user activities, including posting content, replies, likes, reposts, quoting other accounts’ posts, and bookmarking posts.

The new subscription model has been aptly named “Not A Bot” and is primarily aimed at combating the issues of bots and spammers, according to X.

Currently, X offers a premium subscription model known as “X Premium,” which requires users to pay a specific monthly fee. This premium subscription includes perks like a blue checkmark verification for the user’s account and early access to certain features, such as Edit Post.

In India, Twitter Blue, the premium subscription for X, is priced at ₹900 per month for both Android and iOS devices. On the web, the monthly subscription costs ₹650. Users can also opt for an annual subscription, which is available at ₹6,800 for web users and ₹9,400 for iOS and Android users.

The move comes in the wake of concerns over the spread of fake content on the platform. U.S. Senator Michael Bennet recently sought information from tech giants like Meta, X, TikTok, and Google on their efforts to combat the dissemination of false and misleading content, particularly related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Deceptive content, including visuals from older conflicts, video game footage, and altered documents, has been a growing concern on social media platforms, and the role of algorithms in amplifying such content has also raised alarms.

X’s decision to implement a subscription fee under the “Not A Bot” model is a significant step in addressing these issues while also providing users with a more secure and reliable experience on the platform.
