Odisha’s daughter Draupadi Murmu makes history; becomes India’s first tribal & youngest President

Draupadi Murmu has become the 15th President of India. She contested against Yashwant Sinha, the United Opposition’s candidate for the top constitutional post. Draupadi Murmu is a tribal leader from Rairangpur in the Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. Draupadi Murmu is a soft-spoken leader who made her place in politics with her hard work.

64-year-old Murmu won by a huge margin with over 64 percent of the valid votes. She will replace Ram Nath Kovid to become the 15th President of the country. Murmu will be the first person from tribal background to hold the post. Murmu is likely to take oath on Monday (July 25) and the term of present President Ram Nath Kovind ends on Sunday (July 24).

Murmu’s victory was ensured only after the third round when the returning officer announced that she had already received more than 53 percent of the total valid votes.

Draupadi Murmu will be the first president to be born after independence and the youngest to hold the top post. She is also the second woman to become president. Draupadi Murmu, in 2007, received the Neelkanth Award for Best MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) by the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
