Tata Punch CNG Powertrain Details

The Punch CNG is powered by the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine found in its petrol-powered counterpart. With petrol, this engine produces 86hp and 113Nm of torque. However, when running on CNG, it delivers slightly reduced performance, with 73.4hp and 103Nm of peak torque. The car is offered exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. A unique feature of the Punch CNG is its ability to be started directly in CNG mode, something not offered by competitors like Maruti or Hyundai.

The vehicle features Tata Motors’ dual-cylinder setup, similar to the one seen on the Altroz CNG. It employs two smaller tanks that split the 60-litre capacity equally and are positioned beneath the boot floor, allowing for ample storage space. However, due to the CNG setup, the Punch’s boot capacity is reduced to 210 litres, which is 156 litres less than its petrol-powered counterpart.

Tata Punch CNG Exterior, Interior, and Features

Externally, the Tata Punch CNG does not undergo any design changes, except for the addition of the ‘iCNG’ badge on the tailgate, similar to other Tata CNG models. Inside, there are no significant alterations in the interior design as well.

In the top-spec trim, the Punch CNG is loaded with features, including a 7.0-inch touchscreen and digital driver’s display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, 16-inch alloy wheels, an engine start/stop button, automatic climate control, automatic projector headlamps, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and even a sunroof, which is also now available on the petrol-powered Punch.

Competition: Tata Punch CNG vs. Hyundai Exter

The Tata Punch CNG is squarely aimed at competing with the recently launched Hyundai Exter, which comes equipped with a CNG powertrain right from its launch. For reference, the Hyundai Exter is priced between Rs 8.24 lakh to Rs 8.97 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Both vehicles offer customers an option to choose an environmentally friendly CNG-powered variant.
