The family left Aden, where Mukesh was born, in 1958 and moved to the Bhuleshwar neighbourhood of Bombay (now Mumbai), where they resided in a chawl, due to the country’s political atmosphere becoming more insecure (a communal building that commonly features low-rent two-room apartments).
