Socialist leader & former Union Minister, Sharad Yadav dies at 75; irreparable loss for Politics

By Sanjay Maurya

Former Union Minister and Janata Dal (United) or JDU leader Sharad Yadav passed away at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram on Thursday (January 12). He was 75 years old. His daughter Subhashini Sharad Yadav confirmed the news on Twitter saying, “Papa is no more.”

Sharad Yadav was a former union minister in various governments. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and a son.

Former Member of Rajya Sabha

  • Born: 1 July 1947, Makhan Nagar
  • Died: 12 January 2023
  • Previous offices: Member of Rajya Sabha (2017–2017), MORE
  • Party: Rashtriya Janata Dal
  • Spouse: Dr. Rekha Yadav (m. 1989)
  • Children: Subhashini Raj Rao
  • Awards: Banga Bibhushan

Sharad Yadav’s aides told that he fainted at his Chhatarpur residence on Thursday night and was rushed to Fortis Hospital in Gurugram, but could not be saved. Yadav was suffering from kidney disease for a long time and used to undergo ‘dialysis’ regularly.

The health of the former minister was deteriorating and he was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Gurugram. The hospital issued a statement saying that Sharad Yadav was brought to the emergency ward in an “unconscious and unresponsive state” and had “no pulse or recordable blood pressure”.

Many leaders including PM Modi, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and RJD President Lalu Yadav have expressed grief over the death of RJD leader Sharad Yadav.

“Pained by the passing away of Shri Sharad Yadav Ji. In his long years in public life, he distinguished himself as MP and Minister. He was greatly inspired by Dr. Lohia’s ideals. I will always cherish our interactions. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” Modi tweeted.

The Congress also said Yadav’s demise is an irreparable loss to Indian politics. Sharad Yadav held ministerial posts under Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the late 1990s and under VP Singh in 1989. He was elected to the Lok Sabha seven times and served three terms in the Rajya Sabha.

A founding member of Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal (United), he quit after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar scrapped the grand alliance and joined hands with the BJP. He founded the Loktantrik Janata Dal in 2018, but two years later merged it with Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, claiming it was the “first step towards a united opposition”.
