The Congress also said Yadav’s demise is an irreparable loss to Indian politics. Sharad Yadav held ministerial posts under Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the late 1990s and under VP Singh in 1989. He was elected to the Lok Sabha seven times and served three terms in the Rajya Sabha.
A founding member of Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal (United), he quit after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar scrapped the grand alliance and joined hands with the BJP. He founded the Loktantrik Janata Dal in 2018, but two years later merged it with Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, claiming it was the “first step towards a united opposition”.
