5G auction ends: Jio tops the table with INR 88,078 crore in bid

India’s 5G Spectrum Auction 2022 finally concluded on August 1 after a total of 40 clock rounds with a total bid amount of INR 1,50,173 crore. About 71% (51,236.2 MHz) of the total spectrum has been sold to the bidders. Telecom market leader Reliance Jio has bagged spectrum in 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz bands for 20 years at INR 88,078 crore in India’s first 5G spectrum auction.

Reliance Jio said in a statement that the acquisition of the right to access this spectrum will help Jio build the world’s most advanced 5G network and further strengthen India’s global leadership in wireless broadband connectivity. Jio’s 5G network will enable next-generation digital solutions that will accelerate India’s AI-powered march towards becoming a $5 trillion-plus economy.

 Acquired Spectrum across different bands:

  • Airtel: 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 3300 MHz, 26 GHz
  • Jio: 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 3300 MHz, 26 GHz
  • Vodafone: 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz, 26 GHz
  • Adani: 26 GHz

Amount of Spectrum Acquired:

  • Airtel: 19,867.8 MHz – INR 43,084 Crore
  • Jio: 24,740 MHz – INR 88,078 Crore
  • Vodafone Idea: 6228.4 MHz – INR 18,799 Crore
  • Adani: 400 MHz – INR 212 Crore

5G Spectrum Auction: Key Points

  • The largest ever auction of airwaves in India concluded on Monday (August 1) with the sale of spectrum worth INR 1,50,173 crore. About 71% (51,236.2 MHz) of the total spectrum has been sold to the bidders.
  • Reliance Jio placed the highest bid for the 5G spectrum, paying 88,078 crores to buy nearly half of the airwaves offered in the auction.
  • Spectrum in the 26 GHz band which is not for public networks bought by the Adani Group.
  • Sunil Bharti Mittal’s Bharti Airtel bought a 19,867 MHz airwave across different bands for INR 43,084 crore.
  • Vi won a spectrum quantum of 6,228MHz, in 26GHz, 3,300MHz, 2,500MHz, 2,100MHz, and 1,800MHz.
  • The Indian government aims to begin the rollout of 5G – which it says can deliver data speeds about 10 times faster than 4G – by October this year. Globally, next-generation networks are seen as vital for emerging technologies such as self-driving cars and artificial intelligence.
